About the Foundation

Dear Friends,

In 1964 the Monument to Six Million Jewish Martyrs was erected at 16th St and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. For several decades, Holocaust survivors and their families gathered by the Monument every year to remember their families and friends who perished in the Holocaust. In 2018, the site around the original Monument was redesigned with new installations to support Holocaust education for students, teachers, and the general public. Our Foundation is proud to have stewarded the evolution of the Horwitz-Wasserman Holocaust Memorial Plaza to the open-air museum that it is today.

Since our opening in 2018, we have welcomed over 50,000 visitors, of all ages and backgrounds. Our visitors come to the Memorial Plaza to learn about the Holocaust and leave with a sense of agency to fight bigotry.

Beyond operating the Memorial Plaza, over the last several years we have also established our organization as the leading provider of Holocaust education in the greater Philadelphia region. To date, we have worked with more than 1,500 teachers through our professional development programs and we are proud that our Holocaust education resources are used in our public and private schools. Our educational content is relatable, inspiring, and action-oriented to engage 21st century students.

Education about the dangers of antisemitism and bigotry is needed now more than ever as we face yet another tide of rising hate. We are alarmed by the current state of our world and are hard at work to bring Holocaust education to broad audiences.

As we look to the future of the Holocaust Memorial Plaza and Holocaust education more broadly, we are undertaking some exciting new initiatives. First, to build our capacity to do even more, we have launched a $9 million endowment campaign. Please consider supporting our endowment campaign as it will allow us to maintain the Holocaust Memorial Plaza in perpetuity while we grow our programs. Second, we have partnered with Mural Arts Philadelphia to bring an over 2,500-square foot mural to the Memorial Plaza in 2025. The mural will not only bring color and depth to the site, but also create new opportunities for visitor engagement and student learning.

We ask you to make a commitment to this challenging, and urgently important work by supporting the Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundation. Thank you for your continued support.

Warmly,

Jared Szychter
