The Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundation and the Horwitz-Wasserman Holocaust Memorial Plaza welcome Bar and Bat Mitzvah students to complete their mitzvah projects with us.
Our mitzvah project opportunity consists of a 12-14 hour commitment, in which students become young ambassadors for Holocaust education by organizing a group tour visiting the Memorial Plaza. Students will learn about the Holocaust and the importance of becoming stand-up citizens, while gaining leadership and organizational skills. Foundation staff will guide students through the following steps:
- Meeting with Foundation staff and touring the Memorial Plaza — Foundation staff will offer a tour of the Memorial Plaza for the student and their family, using the IWalk educational tour guide app.
- Coordinating a group tour of the Memorial Plaza — With the help of Foundation staff, the student will organize a tour of the Memorial Plaza for either their school group, Hebrew school class, or other networks. Foundation staff will help coordinating trip details at every step of the way.
- Practicing with IWalk — The student will select the IWalk tour they wish to focus on and begin practicing both at home and with Foundation staff.
- Leading the Memorial Plaza tour — The student will lead a 45-60 minutes tour with help from Foundation staff.
- Reflections on Mitzvah project — The student will reflect on what was learnt through this experience and share their reflections with friends and family.
Bar and Bat Mitzvah students seeking to complement their existing projects with components of the project outlined above are welcome to contact the Foundation.
